Heart in Mind

April 11, 2016

I have recently written a lot about heart intelligence and its connection to the brain. I mention brain as opposed to mind because the brain, like the heart, is an organ that serves a biological purpose. The metaphorical heart is probably what we relate to the most and that we hear about often. For example, when a sports team plays “with heart” and they play with more heart than their opponent, they can beat a team with superior talent. A memorable example is the saga of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team's victory over the U.S.S.R.'s highly skilled veterans during the winter games in Lake Placid, New York. If you haven’t seen the movie “Miracle” with Kurt Russell, check it out. I am not a hockey fan, but you gotta love this movie. There are countless examples in sports of heart winning out, but what about in business. We treasure the brain in the business world and don’t pay much attention to heart. We want the people with the so called sharpest minds and highest IQ’s to fill our key positions. However, researcher Daniel Goleman taught us that emotional intelligence and our Emotional Quotient (EQ) is equally if not more important in the selection of business talent.

As I have mentioned numerous times, the best leaders take in a finite amount of information and then decide what feels best. Can you describe what that Feel is that they are feeling? What is speaking to them is their heart intelligence. If a person is highly intelligent, but lacks EQ and a heart connection then you will not normally find them in leadership positions. And, if they are managers, they drive everyone crazy around them because they can’t make a decision. Whether the best decision makers realize it or not they are in touch with their heart intelligence. This is not to say that they are all good guys because they are not. They’re just good decision makers or shall I say quick decision makers. I consider a good decision to be for the greater good of the company and the employees. I take it even further in business, because the greater good of your suppliers, the environment, etc. has to be taken into account as well.

To better understand heart intelligence (“heart in mind”) simply ask yourself this question: What tells you that you have a mind? Some will say “my brain” and to that I ask: What tells you that you have a brain? Your soul essence, your spirit, your higher consciousness, your metaphorical heart is what tells you that you have a mind/brain and that you exist. If you have known any great leaders or even just good ones, check out how they measure up in the “heart in mind” department. I think you will find they get high marks.
